Position Summary:

Position is for a plant design engineer located in the Woodlands, TX. The successful candidate will assume a lead engineering design role in the execution of one or more projects within the Global HyCO (Hydrogen & Synthesis Gas) Business of Praxair. Role requires coordination of both internal design work and outsourced engineering with basic guidance and direction. Depending on the project, the candidate will be involved in the engineering work of proposal (FEL), detail engineering, procurement, fabrication, construction, and commissioning. Projects range from facility layout through detailed engineering and construction of gas processing facilities and can be generally categorized as follows:

  • Front End Engineering Design (FEED) , Front End Loading (FEL), and proposal work for future Praxair projects

  • Management of 3rdparty EP(C) capital projects for Praxair over-the fence gas supply

  • Execution of operations capital (revamp and TAR) projects (either in house or 3rdparty oversight)

  • Projects to develop Praxair internal product lines

Successful candidate will serve as a technical expert within the organization leading compliance of engineering deliverables with Praxair standards and industry best practices. Position reports to the manager of civil, structural, piping engineering with no direct reports but may supervise less experienced engineers or contractors assigned to projects.

Key Responsibilities:

Responsible for the management of internal and 3rdparty preparation of engineering analysis, calculations, and specifications necessary for design packages to procure, fabricate, and construct Global HyCO projects.

Responsible for the management of internal and 3rd party civil, structural, mechanical, and electrical design and engineering resources to create procurement, fabrication, construction specifications and design packages for projects.

Front End Loading (FEL)

  • Coordinate with design team to prepare optimized plot plans of new facilities and revamps of existing facilities

  • Generate design sketches for feasibility studies and estimates quantities of civil, structural, piping and electrical materials

  • Estimate engineering hours for both internal resources and third party engineering

  • Develop engineering criteria or basis of design documents based on current codes and standards

Detail Engineering

  • Coordinate with design team in the preparation of drawings for civil, structural, piping, and electrical

  • Prepare specifications related to civil, structural, piping, and electrical

  • Facilitate 30%, 60%, 90%, and constructability design reviews

  • Participate in P&ID, HAZOP, HAZID meetings as required to achieve optimal plant design

  • Perform engineering calculations and select piping material, pipe stress analysis, structural and civil designs, and electrical materials

  • Review vendor drawings for plant design materials (piping, valves, civil, steel, structure, and buildings)

  • Support reliability engineering and mechanical integrity efforts in engineering analysis and design of plant design components

Procurement & Fabrication

  • Prepare specifications and compile bid packages and coordinate with procurement from initial quotation to order execution for piping material, steel, buildings, insulation, heat trace, and other plant design related items

  • Interface directly with internal and external customers and suppliers

Construction & Commissioning

  • Prepare specifications and compile bid packages for subcontracts involving the installation of civil and structural, mechanical, and electrical items

  • Coordinate with on-site construction management to identify, analyzing, and resolving engineering issues across multiple disciplines

Key Accountabilities:

  • Breadth and depth of knowledge in a field of specialization and working knowledge of other fields

  • Interface with internal functional groups (engineering departments, procurement, construction, operations)

  • Ensure design packages are in compliance with Praxair standards as well as country-specific regulations (i.e. ASME, IBC, ASCE-7, ACI, API, OSHA)

  • Lead the resolution of issues such as conflicting design requirements, suitability of materials, and similar

  • Innovate developing, selecting, and implementing engineering techniques and solutions to solve complex problems. Anticipate issues and proactively develops contingencies

  • Outline project requirements, assigns tasks, and supervises progress to ensure that objectives are being met

  • Define critical project criteria to ensure project completion; ensure successful completion of assigned project phases within the budgeted time and cost constraints

  • Influence team members and promote ideas to improve design and implementation practices

  • Make technical decisions based on full awareness of viability, cost, and other benefits

  • Facilitate team meetings and decisions; provides technical direction to project team members

  • Encourage collaboration across functional skills including acting as a lead engineer on complex projects

  • Preform complex tasks and assignments often requiring development of new designs, processes, or techniques

  • Provide technical and engineering support to Praxair regions and/or plants

  • Recommend standards and guidelines and may author and implements improvements to assigned work processes

  • Serve as a consultant to others, providing technical information and engineering recommendations assisting various initiatives

  • Coach and mentor junior engineers within the organization

  • Identify opportunities for cost reduction and continuous improvement initiatives

  • Facilitate consistent use of best practices across plants, regions, and business units


Mandatory Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Engineering

  • Minimum 7 years of experience as project engineer, plant design engineer, or project manager (positions are filled at level commensurate with experience)

  • Detail oriented self-starter with the ability to work independently as well as to lead and participate on cross-functional teams

  • Demonstrated experience in all project phases (FEED, detailed engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning)

  • Team-oriented focus with strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills across all levels within the company as well as organizations outside the company

  • Positive attitude with ability to adapt and respond quickly to changes and work schedule to accommodate project specific needs

  • Practical and results oriented, demonstrating an ability to successfully drive multiple concurrent projects to successful completion under short time constraints

  • Ability to plan and execute project tasks as it relates to plant design disciplines including familiarity with Microsoft Project software

  • Experience with plant design software (Bentley Autoplant, AutoCAD, Microstation, SmartPlant 3D, Navisworks, AutoPipe, Caesar II, RAM, RISA)

  • Current with state of the art tools, design practices, and concepts

  • Both domestic and international travel to facilities and offices expected up to 25% with potential travel to global project sites for an extended period (1-3 months) or expatriate assignment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional Engineering (PE) License

  • Project Management certification (PMI/PMP)

  • Experience in a refinery or chemical process plant engineering as well as an understanding of codes and regulations pertaining to facility design and engineering

  • Knowledge in plant operation, design reviews, HAZOP / P&ID review participation, customer/supplier interface, and construction experience

  • Experience specifying piping material, valves, specialty in-line components, steel, civil, and electrical components

  • Experience performing calculations such as pressure drop and line sizing, flexibility analysis, structural and civil design

  • Experience working with local municipalities on permit requirements and managing submittal requirements

  • Familiarity with HyCO technology (SMR, ATR, POX, OTM) or other industrial equipment including valves, piping systems, industrial equipment and structures

  • Experience in design of modularized process piping and equipment

  • Proven record in managing plant design activities in broad range of projects from $1 million to $50-$200 million range
